Monica Hickam was born in San Francisco and grew up in Daly City. She attended Holy Angels School in Colma and was inspired by the Sisters of the Infant Jesus who ran the school. She thought one day she too would like to be a nun, living a simple life and serving God by serving others. She attended Mercy High School in San Francisco but still kept very close ties with Holy Angels by being a leading member in their Youth Ministry. She earned her nursing assistant certification and worked with developmentally disabled adults and the acutely injured elderly in a convalescent hospital.
After six years, she moved to Southern California where she pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology, met her future husband, married and had their first child, John. She stayed home to care for John and became involved with her son’s preschool by becoming a member of the school board. She knew then that teaching would play a role somewhere in her life.
In 2003, she moved back to the Bay Area when her husband, Mike became the 8th grade teacher at Nativity School. Monica joined the staff at Nativity as Kindergarten Aide in 2007. She had their second child, Shawn, in 2009 and decided to stay home to care for him. She is a substitute teacher at Nativity.
The Hickams have been active members of the Nativity Church since 2004. Monica has served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector for the past few years. She will now take on the many responsibilities of the religious education program for the Parish and is looking forward to being an integral part in preparing the children for the Sacraments.
